The European Commission’s reform proposals for the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) of the European Union are on the table. Now it’s time for the European Parliament and national governments in the EU Council of Ministers to make their decisions. Since 2010, broad coalitions of civil society organisations have been formulating their ideas about how Europe’s agriculture and food production can meet the enormous challenges of the future: climate change, global justice, natural diversity and resource preservation, healthy diets and the development of rural areas are all at stake. Will the reform justify its claim to use “public funds for public services”?

On 20th January 2012, the EU Commissioner for Agriculture Dacian Ciolos will address these critical issues in a debate with civil society.
