Where was civil society?

On 23 November 2011, the Polish Presidency organised a debate on the CAP reform with stakeholders which took place in the European Parliament. The video recording is available here.

The discussion in broad lines: The representatives of new member states asked for faster steps towards equity of direct payments, the farmer’s organisations criticised the greening, the cooperatives underlined the need for support of producer groups, and young farmers welcomed support for young farmers but asked for improvements. Of 3 speakers and 23 discussants, only 3 discussants represented organisations that were not part of the “traditional” farm lobby. Therefore, IFOAM EU Group and others sharply criticised the lack of involvement of a broader civil society in this debate.
