The Farm2Fork strategy is the flagship agri-food element of the EU Green Deal. The EU Green Deal was announced last year as an attempt to make Europe more sustainable, in particular to become “the first climate-neutral continent”. In its own words, Europe needs a new growth strategy that transforms the Union into a modern, resource-efficient and competitive economy where:
- there are no net emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050
- economic growth is decoupled from resource use
- no person and no place is left behind
As part of the EU Green Deal, the agri-food element, the farm2fork strategy, has had a period of consultation from 17th February, closing on 16th March. This strategy “sets out the regulatory and non-regulatory measures needed to create more efficient, climate-smart systems that provide healthy food, while securing a decent living for EU farmers and fishermen.”
From 17th-25th March the Commission will assess these submissions and then release its own final document. So this period is an important time to apply pressure on the Commissions to make a strong and robust farm2fork strategy, one with real, binding targets.Over 200 submissions have been made.
