The hunger makers

This foodwatch report, released back in October, provides overwhelming evidence that speculation with foodstuffs on commodity exchanges drives up prices and causes hunger and starvation to spread.

Journalist and recognised expert on the world of finance, Harald Schumann, was commissioned by the non-profit organsiation to investigate the allegedly destructive relationship between the financial industry, rising food prices and the harm caused to the health of the world’s poorest.

Based on the information gathered, foodwatch is now calling for specific political action to be taken. First and foremost, it is asking the European Union to stringently regulate trading on commodity exchanges so that trading no longer has negative impact on the price of food.
