Irish fresh produce growers this week launched their 2012 primary schools project Incredible Edibles through the Agri Aware charitable trust to encourage children to grow fruit and vegetables at school. The industry-funded initiative has been delivering growing packs and teaching materials to schools across the republic and will be delivering batches strawberry plants towards the end of the month.
“The average Irish person consumes only three of the recommended five portions of fruit and vegetables every day,” minister of state Shane McEntee told journalists when launching the project at Dublin Zoo. Industry funding ensures that schools can take part for free.
There are plans to launch Incredible Edibles later this year as a brand of fresh fruit and vegetables with instore information for shoppers. Last year Agri Aware presented the ongoing Incredible Edibles project at an Obesity Governance Stakeholder Conference in Brussels as a strategy to combat child obesity.
