–Updated Toolkit on CAP implementation launched

(Brussels, 12/12/2013) BEGINS We at ARC2020.eu are delighted to bring you the updated version of our CAP implementation tookit. This document will be of use to policy makers and campaigners alike. It brings information on the CAP reform  process right up to date at European and member state (MS) level. Not only does our toolkit list all the basic background details and all the up-to-date processes at EU level, individual MS and their  interpretation of CAP reform are also highlighted. This CAP reform process has given significantly more power to the MS to implement the CAP in  their own way – our updated toolkit shows you what your MS is doing. Dedicated sections on France, Germany, Poland, Spain, the UK, Ireland, Greece have been written for this document. Individual MS attitudes and actions on internal convergence, top ups, transfers between pillars and coupled payments have also been added. Stop Food Speculation

Swiss banks operating worldwide are involved in the speculation of staple food to a tune of 3,6 billion Swiss Francs. Among these banks, Credit Suisse is the single largest investor in staple food. It is unacceptable that a few investors get rich at the expense of countless poor people! Swiss NGOs Bread for All and the Lenten Fund have launched an online petition and campaign video requesting Brady Dougan, the CEO of Credit Suisse to divest his bank’s investments in stable food. Everybody can sign on! Change for better is possible. As a result of citizen pressure in countries such as Belgium, Germany or the UK, banks including Deutsche Deka Bank, the DZ Bank, and BNP in France have recently pulled out of making business with food speculation. FEATURED CAMPAIGN ACTION : 1000 COWS

On Saturday, September 28, 1000 ‘angry cows’ – citizens, elected officials, farmers, unions – stormed the site of a factory farm development in France to demand an end to the project.  The action was part of an ongoing campaign organised by Confédération Paysanne.  The site in question aims to hold 1000 cows, much larger than France’s average farm size of 44 cows.  Its main goal would not be to produce food, but to use the methane from the cow dung to produce energy.  This project would be a dangerous symbol of the  industrialization of agriculture, with serious consequences on employment and the environment.  Read more here (in French).

  Dear friends and supporters, Hello from Oliver and Shirin, the new ARC2020 communications team! Although sad to say goodbye, all of us at ARC2020 are happy to wish Kate the best on this next, exciting step in her career. She has stepped over to work with Slow Food in Italy, so is remaining in an important area of food and farming politics. This communications role will now be split between the two of us : Oliver, as EU Correspondent, and Shirin as Communication Manager.  We look forward to working closely with many of you! And so to the main news. Despite the substantive CAP agreement during the Irish presidency, there is still much to fight for in the remaining negotiations. September will see Trilogues on CAP budget issues including flexibility between pillars, while late September or October will likely see the Council and Parliament finalising texts and translations. Dear friends and supporters June started off with a bang; and a farm! From 31 May to 1 June, a two day event in the centre of Paris – organised by ARC2020, Confédération paysanne and PAC2013 – saw farmers, animals, market stalls and good food take over Place Stalingrad. Urban and rural consumers from across France came to meet farmers and take part in Ferme à Paris. The event provided fantastic surroundings to share our common wish for a fair, green and local CAP: French Agriculture Minister, Stéphane Le Foll and vice-chair of the EU Parliament Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, José Bové were among those attending.  Towards the end of the month, our attention turned to the decisive Agricultural Council meeting in Luxembourg. On June 24 – the first day of the meeting – young activists from ARC2020 were in town to remind EU politicians of their promise to deliver a CAP reform that reflects the wishes of European citizens.
